Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common types of heel pain. It occurs when the thick band of tissue that runs from your heel to your toes, known as plantar fascia, becomes inflamed. Plantar fasciitis commonly presents as an overuse injury, that occurs due to repetitive strain causing micro- tears in the fascia but can also occur as a result of other risk factors.

The fascia itself is important in providing support for the arch of the foot and also in providing shock absorption. However, when inflamed it can commonly cause a stabbing pain during weight-bearing movements and is typically most pronounced first thing in the morning with your first few steps.

The pain commonly decreases with movement but it may return after long periods of standing or when standing up after sitting for a prolonged period of time. In addition to this, you may experience tenderness on the inside of your heel, and you may feel tightness in your calf muscles and Achilles tendon.

Ignoring plantar fasciitis can result in chronic heel pain that may hinder everyday activities and also result in other complications. When compensating for plantar fasciitis pain, you are likely to alter your walking biomechanics which may result in foot, knee, hip, or back problems in the future.

Clinical examination will take into consideration a patient’s medical history, symptoms, physical activity, risk factors, and more. There are many treatment techniques and rehabilitation exercises that can be used to treat plantar fasciitis and reduce your pain and symptoms.
