Ankle injury

Causes Of Ankle Injuries

Ankle injuries are often thought of as sports injuries. But you don’t have to be an athlete to turn your ankle and hurt it. Something as simple as walking on an uneven surface can cause a painful, debilitating sprain.

Ankle injuries can happen to anyone at any age. However, men between 15 and 24 years old have higher rates of ankle sprain, compared with women older than age 30 who have higher rates than men. The most common ankle injuries are sprains and fractures, which involve ligaments and bones in the ankle. But you can also tear or strain a tendon.

Ankle injuries and pain can be caused by

  • Falling
  • Wearing high heels
  • Running on uneven surfaces
  • Tight and weak muscles
  • Twisting or rolling your ankle
  • Poor footwear
  • Fallen arches
  • Poor biomechanics

Signs And Symptoms

Ankle injuries are one of the most common and painful injuries that we see here at Galway Bay Physio. While a large amount of ankle injuries are caused by sporting related incidents, there are also a high number of people who do not play sport who also injure their ankle, or have ankle pain. There are a number of different problems that can occur after an ankle injury such as:

  • Ligament Sprains or tears
  • Muscle Strains or tears
  • Fractures
  • Stress Fractures
  • Cartilage issues
  • Tendonitis

Treatment

Often after an ankle injury there is considerable swelling and bruising and it may be wise to get an X-Ray to ensure there is no fracture. Alternatively the team at Galway Bay Physio Chartered Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic will be able to diagnose your ankle injury and pain through a thorough physical examination and assessment. Following this examination we will inform you of the steps that are needed to help you recover from your ankle injury and pain, including any other investigations that may be required such as X-Ray or MRI.

Ankle injuries and pain can take anything from 1 week to 6 months to recover depending on the problem. At Galway Bay Physio Chartered Physiotherapy and Sports Injury we have a variety of treatment techniques, and you can be guaranteed that we will do everything in our power to ensure you fully recover.

Your recovery will depend on the factors which may have contributed to your injury, if any, and we will strive to eradicate these factors through our hands on treatment and individualised home exercise programme.
