"An effective.. western medicine-based treatment"
Dry Needling is a cost effective and efficient technique for the treatment of myofascial (connective tissue surrounding and associated with muscle tissue) pain and dysfunction. The approach is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles and should not be confused with the Traditional Chinese Medicine technique of acupuncture.
Dry Needling is an effective technique which was essentially found by mistake. In the past patients who were suffering taugh bands in their muscles, as a result of whiplash, were injected with muscle relaxants. However it was later found that it was the insertion of the needle which led to the relaxtion of the taught bands in the muscle rather than the muscle relaxants themselves.
Today the needles which are used penetrate deep into knots of muscles, to relieve tension and increase blood flow to the region.
At Galway Bay Physio myofascial dry needling is practiced and is commonly used in addition to other physiotherapy modalities in the treatment of myofascial disorders.
